pregnancy loss
Unfortunately, and with great sadness, some pregnancies end in a miscarriage. There are different types and causes of miscarriages, with most occurring in the first trimester of pregnancy. The staff at Virginia Women’s Center is sensitive and responsive to the needs of our patients who lose a pregnancy. We expect your input and will respect your decisions, while guiding you through this difficult time.
Some causes of miscarriage:
This is not a comprehensive list, but does include the most common causes.
- Chromosomal abnormality
- Hormonal problems
- Infections
- Maternal health problems, lifestyle, age or trauma
- Improper implantation of the egg
Warning signs for miscarriage:
Any of these could be signs of a complication but do not necessarily indicate a miscarriage. Call Virginia Women’s Center immediately so our physicians can assess your situation.
- Mild to severe back pain
- Weight loss
- White-pink mucus
- Contractions
- Brown or bright red bleeding, with or without cramps
- Clot like material passing from vagina
- Decrease in pregnancy symptoms
Protection from miscarriage:
There is no way to guarantee the prevention of a miscarriage. Many causes are natural, but the following suggestions may decrease your odds.
- Exercise—after consulting with your physician
- Healthy diet and weight
- Stress management
- Prenatal vitamins, specifically folic acid
- No smoking or alcohol
- Protect your abdomen
- Limit or eliminate caffeine
- Check with your doctor before using any medications, including over-the-counter
- Avoid environmental hazards like radiation and infectious disease
- Avoid contact sports or activities with high risk of injury
After a miscarriage:
Depending upon the length of the pregnancy, a physical recovery can take from several weeks to a month or longer, during which menstruation should resume. As the body heals, a woman may experience:
- Bleeding or spotting
- Lower abdominal pain or cramps
- Breast pain, tenderness or engorgement
Your doctor will clearly explain and present a recovery plan to you that includes the importance of hygiene, a schedule for resuming normal activities, how to manage your emotional distress, the importance of support from family and friends, and when you can choose to pursue another pregnancy. Your doctor will tailor a plan to your specific needs and will follow you through the process.
